Cambridge Academy, Greenwood, SC, Seeks Head of School

Position Summary

The Board of Trustees of Cambridge Academy is seeking a driven, charismatic, and strategic educational leader to fill the role of Head of School. The next Head of School will revere Cambridge Academy’s purposefully small, family-like environment, while embracing and building upon the school’s distinguishing tradition of renowned academic excellence and the objective to “Aim High” in all that we do to offer a superior college preparatory education.

Cambridge Academy’s next Head of School will maintain the school’s emphasis on strength of character through educating and nurturing the whole child. S/he will also be a visionary and communicative leader who stays abreast of curricular trends, diplomatically unites and engages faculty, staff, student families, and the community, and who leads the school to the next level of success.

About our school

From its founding in 1968 to the present, Cambridge Academy has sought to live out the visions of its founders to provide the best possible college preparatory education for students whose families value the challenging, yet nurturing, environment that an independent school can provide. We currently provide the following academic programs with enrollment at 200 students for the 2016-17 school year as of 8/29/16:

  • Cougar Cubbies – for children aged 18-months to 2-years-old;
  • Early Childhood – for children aged 3-years, 4-years, and 5-years;
  • Lower School – Grades 1 through 5;
  • Middle School – Grades 6 through 8; and
  • High School – Grades 9 through 12.

We have a longstanding tradition of academic excellence, and we continue to believe that, through sustained hard work, our students excel in communicative skills, mathematical and logical thinking, scientific methodology, and gain a deep awareness of and appreciation for the world around them.

We believe strongly in balance – our curriculum is broadly defined to insure that each student develops a full complement of intellectual, artistic, athletic, and civic skills. We believe in fostering and strengthening deep relationships with peers, families, and communities.

In the past two decades, the local market for primary and secondary education has become saturated with a variety of choices. Broadening of the market, with the addition of several independent school options, online learning academies, and an inundation of public magnet schools, has blurred community sentiment of the value of the unparalleled academic experience offered at Cambridge Academy. It is our goal that, with the leadership of an enterprising Head of School, Cambridge Academy will strengthen its position in the community as the number one choice among families who seek academic excellence as an alternative to conventional education. Specifically, we wish to meet enrollment capacity in all lower school grades, while growing middle and upper school grade levels, thus making sustainable, and expanding upon, our high-level, dual-credit course offerings and extracurricular opportunities for our oldest students.

Qualifications:

– Excellent written and verbal communication skills for a variety of audiences, including: students, student families, faculty, staff, business leaders, and the greater community, with an eagerness to build and maintain vital relationships for recruitment and fiscal betterment of the school.

– Strong interpersonal skills – A good listener and mediator, who works collaboratively with others and encourages open, constructive discussion of ideas and opinions.

– Proven strength in sound fiscal oversight and strategic planning, including experience in leading the development of positive, long term fundraising relationships with donors, alumni, and other key constituents.

– Leadership experience in an independent school setting is preferable, as well as experience as a teacher in an independent school setting, with a willingness to instruct a minimum of one class or course per school year.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate that s/he is well-qualified to:

– Oversee all aspects of day-to-day operations of the school, including but not limited to: student interaction, facilities, personnel, programs, curriculum, and compliance.

– Execute the school’s policies, which are set by the Board of Trustees.

– Work positively with the Board of Trustees, its chair and committees, to establish strategic goals aimed at continual betterment in all areas, while always keeping them informed of the operations of the school.

– Regularly and diplomatically evaluate and advance the school’s culture, curriculum, faculty, staff, services, extra-curricular opportunities, and summer programs.

– Support and develop the faculty and staff through positive guidance and professional leadership.

– Oversee the school’s business operations and act with fiscal responsibility within financial limits established by the Board of Trustees.

– Oversee the school’s marketing, admissions, and development programs.

– Give 100% to being an ambassador and supporter of Cambridge Academy internally among faculty and student families, as well as externally by being thoroughly embedded within the greater community.

– Commit to defend and uphold the school’s independent and uncompromising identity.

Interested candidates should submit the following, via email attachments, by October 15, 2016:

  • A current resume.
  • A statement of educational philosophy (1 – 2 pages).
  • At least five references (including email addresses, and telephone numbers).
